Geriatric Massage - A Home Study Course

Overview
– The elderly is the fastest growing population in the country. The elderly presents the massage therapists with some unique challenges. There are the obvious physical changes such as thinning skin, reduced muscle mass, and vision and hearing impairments.

Sensorineural deficits and the effects of illness predispose the elderly to accidental injury. The majority of elderly has at least one chronic medical condition, most often managed with medications, so a thorough intake is crucial. This population faces many lifestyle and emotional changes such as retirement, reduced income, and the loss of loved ones. To meet the challenges of this population segment, the therapist needs to cultivate a new skill set Information presented in this home study course provides the therapist with this important information.

 

In this course, you will

1. Define the term geriatric massage
2. Contrast and compare Swedish massage with geriatric massage
3. Contrast and compare Day-Break’s method of geriatric massage with the method of Comfort Touch
4. Discuss the predominant theories of aging
5. Define important physical changes noted in the elderly
6. List benefits of geriatric massage
7. Identify treatment guidelines when working with the elderly
8. Modify massage techniques to suit the various needs of elderly client’s that have medical conditions
9. List ways of accommodating elderly clients who have visual and auditory impairments
10. Identify the determining factors when assessing if a senior client is robust or frail
11. Give examples of ways to make a massage area safer for the elderly
12. Provide massage that is appropriate for the elderly

Workbook, instructions for completing the home study course, an answer sheet, and an open-book final examination composed of 20 multiple choice questions.
